The Canning Stock Route Project is founded upon a program of workshops in multiple creative mediums. Various workshops throughout Australia - in remote communities, regional centres and cities - have been pivotal to the development and delivery of the Canning Stock Route Project. Since the birth of the project in 2006 there have been a total of 51 different workshops with communities, artists and the project team. This includes, but is not limited to, a six week Return to Country workshop, eight community consultation meetings, over six artists' camps, seven curators' workshops and 27 content approval workshops in communities.

KUNAWARRITJI

We design baskets to remind us of the piti (wooden dishes) we used to carry on our heads.
Nola Taylor, 2008

In April 2008 a big mob of Martumili artists returned to Kunawarritji (Well 33) and Kunkun for an extensive painting and weaving workshop. Distinguished Western Australian fibre artists Nalda Searles facilitated the weaving workshop. Many of the works now produced in these workshops now form part of the Canning Stock Route collection.

I was away when they started making baskets. I came home to Jigalong and watched my sister in law and she taught me. It was really nice. I used to watch Yikartu Bumba and Kumpaya; they really love making baskets. Nalda Searles came to Parnngurr and we coiled baskets all night and all day. All night and all day – no sleep in Parnngurr! Kumpaya, you have to talk because you brought this good idea to us.
Yuwali Janice Nixon, Parnngurr, 2008
