Ngumpan begins with a dream-like mood evoked through the images and ambient sounds of nature. We enter a bush camp at the beginning of the wet season where ceremonial skills are being passed down to younger generations. Young men collect materials to make artefacts, natural materials are prepared for body decoration, headdresses are woven and decorated and the click-click of tommy-hawks against hard wood, the motion of rasps and the murmur of voices become a deeply meditative rhythm of creative absorption that erupts eventually into a celebration of dance and song and a wealth of living culture.
